Ihug purchased by Vodafone in a $41 million dollar move

In a move by vodafone to launch a ZuHause type service into New Zealand Vodafone recently purchased Ihug - Ihug is one of New Zealands top Internet Service providers and has been purchased several times before the move by vodafone.

This looks to be a major move to the local loop unbundling scheduled for 2007.

The question becomes one of strength, is this a good move? Vodafone in my opinion is the strongest mobile player in New Zealand but will that translate easily to local loop transactions?

It seems since the purchase in October 2006 the provider has been plagued by grumpy users posting in blogs all over the net - or that's what the competitors wish you to believe. PC Worlds blogs have been plagued by strong statements of incompetency, but when you delve further you find it was the users error more than the providers as they had not followed the terms of use policy laid out by Ihug.

The chief complaint was with servers purchased by ihug when Quik in the US where taken over - It seems some would be hacker took out the servers causing the loss of clients websites, now I understand fully that the loss of 500 customers websites would be a burden but lets look deeper, these sites are provided for personal use so it seems unfair to brand Vodafone as the bad guy, or Ihug for that matter as hackers are forever trying to bring down providers and the recent hack on Ihugs - Quik servers is no exception. Even commercial companies are advised to maintain there own local backup as the service providers can only use backups to protect against so much, and that does not necessarily protect against a would be virus attack that a user has in-advertently uploaded not realizing that has now infected everyone.

A few years ago we experienced exactly that issue on the virus front, a user not realising he had infected files uploaded his site and the virus attached itself to the file he had uploaded via the java script. This did not cause a major concern at first, but as the script was new the virus scanners where unaware of its potentially lethal content and so the machine was infected, what's worse as the backup was run at midnight the backup got infected as well.

It took 4 days cleaning the machine to which we finally removed the mongrel code. It took 14 days for the virus companies to code against it. As we had advised all or clients to keep a good backup of their sites those few users who had some files missing where able to upload them with no real downtime issues.

But you can see how easy it is for a problem to become an issue and with Ihug there has been no backup guarantees implied or otherwise for their personal website servers. We had taken extra steps to protect against a possible threat but even we did not count on the user who had not taken care to check his files.

I must point out that no matter how stable the provider you should always maintain your own local backup anyway.

That said I have heard of other issues surrounding email and broadband connections, but we do have to remember that all of the providers in New Zealand are connected via Telecom at some point until the local loop is unbundled, so we have to be patient as not all the problems vodafone are experiencing will be 100% within their control. My experience with Vodafone has always been one of good competency.

I would give Vodafone some time as I am sure they will iron out any issues fairly quickly and take note, buying any company has its teething problems while you reorganize service to the level your customers expect.
